The Niners, who opened their franchise and the season with a loss to the Chargers in Week 1, bounced back in the first game of their doubleheader with a 34-26 victory over the Patriots. The Niners, who were held scoreless in the first half last week, jumped out to a 7-0 lead when Martin B found Gregory S in the endzone. The Patriots answered back with a Hank B pass to Justin H. In the first of four lead changes, captain Greg G added a touchdown reception to give the Patriots a 14-7 halftime lead. The Niners tied the score at 14-14 in the second half but the Patriots regained the lead with the second score of the day by Greg S. A missed extra point by the Patriots would prove costly as the Niners' "DJ" scrambled off a 40+ touchdown reception to give the Patriots a 21-20 lead that they would not give up. Fred R would throw and catch touchdown passes for the Niners to increase their lead. Tom gave the Patriots their last touchdown of the day in their first loss of the season.
